Dead RisingZombies surrounding a shopping mall while the humans inside struggle for survival? Dead Rising isn’t an official game of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, but it is obviously hugely influenced by it.

The free-roaming nature of the play also takes a big leaf out of the Grand Theft Auto series of games and it’s up to the player to decide whether to battle the zombies, help the other humans or hide in a closet until the 72 hours tick down.

With anything you can pick up becoming a weapon, Dead Rising is bloody, brutal and not afraid to tear the flesh off its human characters.

Which makes it the closest thing to being in a Romero film until they sort out that Willy Wonka technology to beam us inside a TV set.

Overall Rating: 9/10

Update: Annoyingly, the game dialogue boxes have been designed for HD televisions. If you haven't invested in one yet, knock a couple of marks off.
