Phantasy Star Online was a game that shone back in a time when Sega still made games consoles. With recent titles such as World of Warcraft taking the online roleplaying world by the scruff off its chainmail collar, Phantasy Star Universe seems like a throwback to simpler times.
And that’s not a compliment for something that charges gamers £6.99 per month to play. With this latest “update” to the series, the single-player offline story mode restricts you to playing a 17-year-old human boy battling against a destructive race called The Seed. Back in the day, your choice of any character or race could be played online or offline. That allowed you to advance your skills in the comfort of your own home before popping online to join group missions, but also made the whole game a lot more fun. Phantasy Star Universe does have some plus points. The combat system is easy to get the hang of, even when combining a number of moves using the quick access menus. The offline story mode also manages to turn a fairly light plotline into something more cinematic. Overall though, this isn’t the update fans of the series wanted to see. Overall Rating: 5/10
