Channel 4 has been evicted from the Big Brother (Carphone Ware)house for good, after the mobile phone retailer announced it was cancelling its sponsorship of the reality show completely. Carphone Warehouse suspended its sponsorship earlier in the year following the race row over Celebrity Big Brother.
Telecoms watchdog Ofcom received tens of thousands of complaints at that time, and the adverse publicity saw other companies ditch Jade Goody’s perfume and other associated products from their stores. “Our concern has rapidly mounted about the broadcast behaviour of individuals within the Big Brother house,” Charles Dunstone, CEO of Carphone Warehouse, said at the time. “We are totally against all forms of racism and bullying and indeed this behaviour is entirely at odds with the brand values of The Carphone Warehouse.” Yesterday, the company confirmed that its sponsorship would end for good, although it may still run ads during the breaks in the programme. “We have concluded the huge publicity around the show and our involvement within that means that now is the time for us to look for an alternative,” a company statement said yesterday. |
