wii_small.jpgPeople often berate the kids of today for being lazy, couch potatoes playing on their game consoles all day long and not getting enough exercise. However, a new study by Liverpool John Moores University has found that playing computer games, and especially the Wii, can help kids lose 28 pounds in weight in a year.

The boffins compared activity levels of children playing computer games and then playing on the Wii. The reserarchers then measured that against resting levels. They found that during 15 minutes of game play energy expenditure levels rose 60 per cent. astonishingly, kids playing on the Wii saw energy expenditure levels increase by 156 per cent.

The studies revealed that heart rates kids playing on their Wiis could get as high as 130 beats per minute, compared to 85 beats per minute for on a traditional console. The eggheads found that boys expended more energy than girls.

"Motion sensor-controlled consoles can make an impact on a child's energy expenditure and calories burned, however parents should encourage outdoor pursuits," said Professor Tim Cable, who carried out the research.

"Research from GameVision's Consumer Intelligence Report shows that, on average, gamers in the UK currently spend around 12.2 hours a week playing computer games. Therefore, it is important to promote as much activity as possible during this time. Active consoles such as the Wii could provide a means of motivating children who are less active," he added.

Cable said parents should encourage other physical activities and outdoor pursuits in order for their children to lead well-balanced lives. Yes, but the Wii is such fun and as we know you can definitely lose weight by playing on one already .
