Shoppers queuing up outside Virgin’s Oxford Street store to buy a PS3 at midnight were given a nice little surprise: a free 46in TV. At 11:40, Sony’s UK boss Ray Maguire addressed the waiting crowd and announced that they’d all be sent a brand new Sony Bravia W series TV worth around £2,000.

The televisions are near the top of Sony’s range and support a Full HD resolution of 1080p. The giveaway nicely rounded off an event that was originally under threat by the police who were worried that there’d be muggings. Fortunately, would-be muggers weren’t presented with the ideal opportunity to make with a PS3 and 46in TV, as Sony kindly offered to post the sets to the lucky recipients. Sadly Absolute Gadget was in the pub at the time of the launch and missed out on the bargain of the year.
