Page 1 of 3 Las Vegas' CES show has thrown up a treasure trove of weird and wonderful gadgets to the delight of gathered hacks. But Star Wars fans won't have seen anything quite as special as this R2-D2 MES home entertainment system from Nikko Home Electronics.
Recreating the “Help me Obi Wan Kenobi you’re my only hope” scene from A New Hope, this piece of Star Wars gadgetry spotted by Gizmodo hides a LCOS projector capable of an 800 x 600 pixel 80-inch picture. Want to wind down with a movie? Then R2-D2 can tilt its head up to the heavens and project your blockbusters onto the ceiling. That’s just the beginning. With the ability to play audio CD’s, DVD-R/RW, SVCD, MP3, MP4 and FM radio, the unit is the only piece of home entertainment equipment Star Wars enthusiasts will need. It even has an iPod dock. But nowadays what doesn’t? What makes this home entertainment system so much cooler is that you can control R2-D2 by remote, making it follow you around your house as if you were Luke Skywalker. And the remote control is a miniature model of the Millennium Falcon! Rather than being in ‘a galaxy far far away’ R2-D2 will be out in the UK in a few months time, with the Jawas charging £1,500.
