Of course, the biggest step-change would be changing the coding of the broadcast from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4, which is a much more efficient algorithm and would allow nearly twice as many standard definition channels than is currently available.

On the horizon is a new European transmission standard called DVB-T2 (which we assume has been sent back from the future to save Sarah Connor). This could increase capacity by another 30 per cent.

Ofcom believed that all these measured when taken together could double the capacity of DTT and get terrestrial HD off the starting block.
