slacker.jpgEvery new media player makes the claim that it could give the eminently desirable iPod a run for its money. However, the Slacker device is a portable media player that not only plays your tunes and videos but can also download your own personalised radio station from satellite.

The Slacker device is so-called as research from the company found that 70 per cent of people that listen to music can't be bothered to update their playlists. The device works a lot like personalised internet radio services, such as last.fm and Pandora as it refreshes its playlists for you based on your tastes in music. If you love a song you let the player know or if you don't you "ban" it - a bit like the thumbs up/thumbs down feature on Tivo players.

As well as playing you old songs you like, it will also play new stuff based on your preferences too. According to the company, it has licenses for two million songs so there is bound to be something playing that you like!

But the device itself is around the same size as a Blackberry and connects with satellites and wireless hotspots to update songs stored on the player's hard drive. It has a 4-inch colour screen that displays album art, artist information and visualizations

There is also a Slacker Web Player, available now that works a bit like Napster and last.fm. If you subscribe to the service you can get access to sons on-demand.

The company plans to launch the Slacker device in the summer. Different models will be available, ranging from $150 to $299 (£78 to £156) for the US launch, according to the company. Subscriptions for a premium, ad-free service start at $7.50 (£3.90) per month.
