hd-dvd-and-blu-ray-logos.gifIt would appear that those film industry executives that make flicks of a more - shall we say - adult nature could have a big effect as to which next generation DVD format wins out.

The people over at tech website Tom's Hardware did a straw poll of a dozen companies exhibiting AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas found that most of the companies there preferred HD-DVD over Blu-Ray, despite many thinking Blu-Ray has the edge over its rival in terms of technological quality.

The reason given by most of the companies was the relative cheapness and ease in which movies can be produced. This has echoes in the VHS-Betamax video wars of the eighties with the adult entertainment industry going with VHS over the superior Betamax for largely the same reasons.

There are also questions over whether Sony would permit racy vids to be available on the Blu-Ray format. As reported in german tech site Heise, One movie producer said they were forced to release porn movies in HD-DVD as no Blu-Ray disc manufacturers would risk producing his discs as Sony was against the idea and manufacturers didn't want to lost the license to make Blu-Ray discs.

It would seem an important battle has been won by HD-DVD and could leave Blu-Ray rather flaccid.
