Traxdata has launched the first recordable HD DVD disc into the UK market, with the discs going on sale in shops and online. Carrying up to 15GB, the discs will let PC users with a high-definition recordable drive backup their hours of video, albums full of photos, music collections, software and any other data.

The HD DVD disc format provides three times the amount of digital storage compared with a standard single layer DVD, bumping it up to the 15GB total.

In contrast to the red laser used by standard DVD products, the HD DVD uses a shorter blue-violet 405nm laser to read information – which reduces diffraction and increases the accuracy of the laser.

That allows data to be read from a higher density on the disc surface and has led to the significant increase in data capacity.

“As the leaders in the UK market, we feel it is our responsibility to enable our customers to take advantage of the ever-improving hardware, quickly,” said Guido Liber, head of marketing at Traxdata.

“Consumers and business users alike are continually demanding more storage capacity as we move towards a progressively digital age.”

Traxdata received class-A verification for its HD DVD-R single-layer discs from the DVD Forum in May 2006.

Future product releases include HD DVD-RAM and HD DVD-RW, which are both due out towards the end of 2006.

Traxdata is the main brand name of optical storage producer the Ritek Corporation.
